What Changed This Christmas for US Federal Employees?

This holiday season is different for US federal workers.

On December 18, 2025, former US President Donald J. Trump signed an executive order that gave two extra holidays for this year:

December 24 (Christmas Eve)

December 26 (Day after Christmas)

These days will be treated as federal holidays, along with Christmas Day (December 25).

Because of this decision, many federal employees may enjoy a five-day holiday break around Christmas — a rare “holiday bridge” in the US government system.

⚠️ Important Exception You Should Know

The order clearly states that:

Agency heads can ask employees to work if it is required for

national security, defense, or public needs

This means:

Emergency services

Security-related departments

Critical public service roles

👉 These employees may still have to report to duty.
